How do people know the Bible is true?
If you’re going to stake your life on something, you want to know it’s trustworthy. The Bible makes extraordinary claims - that it’s not just ancient wisdom, but God’s actual Word. So how can we know if that’s really true?
- Fulfilled prophecy proves divine origin - Over 300 prophecies about Jesus came true exactly as written centuries before He was born
- Scripture declares its own inspiration - The Bible claims to be God’s Word, not human opinion or philosophy
- God’s Word endures forever - Heaven and earth will pass away, but Scripture stands eternal through all opposition
- The Bible transforms lives supernaturally - It’s living and active, accomplishing what God intends in those who believe
- Miracles confirm the message - Signs and wonders validate that the Word is from God, not human invention
The Bible has proven itself trustworthy through centuries of fulfilled prophecy, its miraculous preservationHow has the Bible been preserved throughout history?God preserved the Bible through faithful scribes, countless manuscripts, and His sovereign power. Full answer coming soon… , and its supernatural power to change lives. More than 300 specific prophecies about Jesus were written hundreds of years before He was born - and all came true in precise detail. This kind of accuracy points to a divine source, not human guesswork.
Scripture claims to be “given by inspiration of GodWhat does it mean that the Bible is inspired by God?Biblical inspiration means God guided authors to write Scripture as His Word to humanity. Full answer coming soon… ” ( 2 Timothy 3:16 WEB "Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness," KJV "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:" 2 Timothy 3:16 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter ). It doesn’t present itself as containing God’s Word mixed with human ideas - it declares itself to be the Word of God. Jesus affirmed this, saying “the Scripture cannot be broken” ( John 10:35 WEB "If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture can’t be broken)," KJV "If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;" John 10:35 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter ) and “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away” ( Mark 13:31 WEB "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away." KJV "Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away." Mark 13:31 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter ).
But perhaps the most compelling evidence is what happens when people engage with Scripture. Hebrews 4:12 WEB "For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and..." KJV "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the..." Hebrews 4:12 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter describes it as “living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword.” The Word performs its work in those who believe ( 1 Thessalonians 2:13 WEB "For this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when you received from us the word of the message of God, you accepted it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God,..." KJV "For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which..." 1 Thessalonians 2:13 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter ). It doesn’t return empty but accomplishes what God intends ( Isaiah 55:11 WEB "so is my word that goes out of my mouth: it will not return to me void, but it will accomplish that which I please, and it will prosper in the thing I sent it to do." KJV "So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it." Isaiah 55:11 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter ). When miracles follow the preaching of God’s Word, hearts open to believe - the supernatural confirms the truth of the message.
A deeper look
Truth exists and can be known
Before examining the Bible’s reliability, we have to settle whether truth itself exists. Some people claim “there is no such thing as truth” or “all truth is relative.” But these statements collapse under their own weight.
If someone says “there is no such thing as truth,” ask them: “Is that statement true?” If they say yes, they’ve contradicted themselves - they’ve just claimed something is true while denying truth exists.
If they say “all truth is relative,” ask: “Is that statement relatively true or absolutely true?” If it’s only relatively true, it might be false for you. If it’s absolutely true, then not all truth is relative.
These self-defeating arguments prove the opposite of what they claim. Truth exists and can be known. This matters because if truth is unknowable, examining the Bible’s claims would be pointless. But since truth exists and is knowable, investigating whether the Bible is true becomes a reasonable pursuit.
Fulfilled prophecy proves divine origin
Over 300 prophecies written hundreds of years beforehand came true in Jesus. This isn’t vague prediction - these were specific details about His birthplace, lineage, manner of death, and resurrection. Isaiah 46:9-10 WEB "Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is no other. I am God, and there is none like me. I declare the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done...." KJV "Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet..." Isaiah 46:9-10 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter says God declares “the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things which have not been done.”
Human beings cannot predict specific events centuries in advance with perfect accuracy. This precision sets Scripture apart from any other religious textHow does the Bible compare to other religious texts? The Bible reveals God's direct pursuit of humanity through Jesus Christ, unlike other texts showing humanity's search for the divine. Full answer coming soon… . When biblical prophecy proves this reliable, we can trust the Bible’s promises about the future - including eternal lifeWhat is eternal life?Eternal life is knowing God and Jesus personally. It is only possible through Jesus. It means avoiding Hell, but also so much more. Full answer coming soon… and God’s faithfulness.
Scripture declares its own inspiration
Scripture doesn’t shy away from claiming divine authority. 2 Timothy 3:16 WEB "Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness," KJV "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:" 2 Timothy 3:16 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter states plainly: “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousnessWhat is righteousness?Right standing with God or man. Being right with God is something we can't earn but receive as a gift through faith in Jesus. Read full answer →.” The apostle Peter explains that “no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy SpiritWho is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is God's third person. He empowers us, teaches truth, and reveals spiritual realities beyond human wisdom. Full answer coming soon… ” ( 2 Peter 1:21 WEB "For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke, being moved by the Holy Spirit." KJV "For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. in old time: or, at any time" 2 Peter 1:21 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter ).
Jesus affirmed this authority. He said “the Scripture cannot be broken” ( John 10:35 WEB "If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture can’t be broken)," KJV "If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;" John 10:35 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter ) and taught that not even “a single jot, not a stroke of a pen, will disappear from the LawWhat is the difference between law and grace?Law reveals our inability to avoid sin. Grace is God's unearned favor despite our flaws - Jesus took our sin and gave us His righteousness as a gift. Read full answer → until everything is accomplished” ( Matthew 5:18 WEB "For most certainly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the law, until all things are accomplished." KJV "For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." Matthew 5:18 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter ). Jesus never said the Scriptures merely contain the Word of God - He called them the Word of God. He prayed, “Sanctify them through your truth: your word is truth” ( John 17:17 WEB "Sanctify them in your truth. Your word is truth." KJV "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth." John 17:17 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter ).
God’s Word endures forever
Human writings fade with time. Scripture endures in a way that defies natural explanation. Mark 13:31 WEB "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away." KJV "Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away." Mark 13:31 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter records Jesus saying, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.” Isaiah 40:8 WEB "The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God stands forever.”" KJV "The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever." Isaiah 40:8 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter declares, “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.”
Despite centuries of opposition, attempted destruction, and cultural change, the Bible remains. Psalms 12:6 WEB "Yahweh’s words are flawless words, as silver refined in a clay furnace, purified seven times." KJV "The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times." Psalms 12:6 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter describes God’s words as “pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.” The Bible has been tested, challenged, and scrutinized more than any other book in history - yet it stands.
The Bible transforms lives supernaturally
Perhaps the most personal evidence is Scripture’s power to change lives. Hebrews 4:12 WEB "For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and..." KJV "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the..." Hebrews 4:12 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter says the word of God is “living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” This isn’t just ancient text - it’s living truth that works in the present.
1 Thessalonians 2:13 WEB "For this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when you received from us the word of the message of God, you accepted it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God,..." KJV "For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which..." 1 Thessalonians 2:13 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter explains: “when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.” The Word performs its work - it has power to accomplish what God intends. Isaiah 55:11 WEB "so is my word that goes out of my mouth: it will not return to me void, but it will accomplish that which I please, and it will prosper in the thing I sent it to do." KJV "So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it." Isaiah 55:11 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter confirms this: “So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”
As you engage with Scripture, something supernatural happens. Romans 10:17 WEB "So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." KJV "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Romans 10:17 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter tells us “faithWhat is faith?Faith is trusting in Jesus Christ - not working up belief, but receiving a gift from God that grows as you hear His Word and dismiss unbelief. Read full answer → comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” Faith grows, hearts change, and truth becomes real.
Miracles confirm the message
When Jesus and the apostles preached God’s Word, miracles often followedWhat miracles did Jesus perform?Jesus healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, cast out demons, raised the dead, controlled the wind and the waves, walked on water, and more. Full answer coming soon… to validate the message. Jesus used supernatural works to confirm that His teaching came from God. Mark 16:20 WEB "They went out, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word by the signs that followed. Amen." KJV "And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen." Mark 16:20 BibleGateway · BibleHub · Blue Letter describes the early disciples going out preaching, “the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.”
When people see something that defies natural explanation - healing, deliverance, answered prayer - it becomes harder to dismiss the message. Miracles exist to glorify God and open hearts to believe His Word. When someone is healed through faith in Jesus’ name, hearts open to the truth that the Bible really is God’s Word - the supernatural confirms what Scripture declares.
What the Bible is NOT
- Not a collection of human opinions - It claims divine inspiration, not human philosophy
- Not just ancient history - It’s living and active, speaking to us today
- Not mixed with error - Jesus said Scripture cannot be broken and will not pass away
- Not one option among many - It declares itself as God’s authoritative revelation

After searching existing questions, this appears to be a new topic. The existing question “What is the Bible?” introduces Scripture as God’s written revelation, but doesn’t address the epistemological question of how we know it’s true or trustworthy. That question focuses on what the Bible is (God’s Word, a collection of books, etc.), while this question addresses why we should believe it’s reliable.
Agent reasoning: Created as new question rather than adding to “What is the Bible?” because the focus is different - this is apologetic/evidential while the existing question is definitional. These questions naturally complement each other and should be cross-referenced via relatedQuestions.
